Entering 2003 with Hope and Courage: An Update from the Truth Commission into Genocide in Canada and Rev. Kevin Annett Greetings to you all, Our years-long efforts to awaken the conscience of "mainstream" Canadians, and others, about the planned and ongoing extermination of native people in Canada seem to be finally paying off. It's often said that one needs to reach a critical mass of 10% of any group of people before things start changing, and by that measure we seem to have started a definite chain reaction across this continent. Some indications ... 1. "Hidden from History: The Canadian Holocaust", our book which documents the murder and genocide of native children in church-run "residential schools", was on the agenda of an all-party House of Commons meeting in early December, according to a parliamentary source in Ottawa. On December 14, the latter remarked to me, "Everybody knows something needs to be admitted but nobody wants to be the first one to do it. We're all scared shitless. The spins and cover-ups just haven't worked. Indians are describing murders in the residential schools right across the country. And they're doing more than talking." 2. "Hidden from History" has become required reading in native studies courses in a score of universities and colleges in Texas, Washington, California, Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. 3. The number of radio interviews, public talks and consultations with native groups I have engaged in has more than tripled in the last two months. With these has come a flood of new testimonies from native eyewitnesses, and evidence about genocidal practices against native people, including the first possible forensic evidence of mass killings and mass graves in British Columbia. 4. The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva has confirmed that it will be sending its representatives to Canada this spring to conduct initial hearings into "human rights abuse allegations" against native people, including Genocide. One can feel the whole rotten edifice of crimes, cover-up and denial teetering in the storm winds of change. We need only maintain the public pressure on the government, RCMP and mainline churches to see it all topple and fall. So here are some important upcoming events and activities in this Truth and Justice campaign: ... Monday, December 30 and January 13, 1 pm: Tune in to "Hidden from History" on Vancouver Co-op Radio, 102.7 FM, the program hosted by yours truly. Topics will include the illegal theft of water and native land in British Columbia today, and the latest efforts by church and state to muzzle me, and attack witnesses to pedophilia in high places. ... Tuesday, January 7, 7 pm: A public talk and reading by me from my latest book, "Love and Death in the Valley, at the Speakers' Forum, 318 Keary Street in New Westminster, BC, near the Royal Columbian Hospital. ... Wednesday, January 15, 7 pm: Monthly meeting of our Truth Commission, to plan public protests and campaigns at the Canadian Autoworkers Hall, 326-12th St. in New Westminster. ... Friday, January 24, 6 pm: A public talk and reading by me from "Love and Death in the Valley" at the Cowichan Community Centre (Board Room) in Duncan, BC, 2687 James street. ... Monday, February 3: The commencing of a speaking tour by me across BC and Canada, to coincide with the official opening of regional offices of our Truth Commission into Genocide in Canada, in Winnipeg and Toronto. Here are some concrete ways you can help with our campaign: 1. Order my books, "Love and Death in the Valley", as well as "Hidden from History:The Canadian Holocaust", and get your local library to do the same. You can access the first book at: , and the latter at: . 2. Book a public space in your community for me to give a talk and reading, like in the local library or community centre. Then contact me (below) to arrange the publicity and other stuff related to my visit. 3. Donate to our campaign (see the canadiangenocide website for details). 4. Attend the upcoming vigils and protests to be organized in major Canadian cities, by contacting this email for more information. 5. Sign the online petition to Revenue Canada listed on the canadiangenocide website, demanding that the Canadian churches guilty of Genocide lose their taxpayer-supported charitable status. 6. Withdraw all financial and other involvement in the Roman Catholic, United, Anglican, and Presbyterian churches in Canada, and urge your friends and families to do the same. 7. Organize protests and vigils outside Canadian embassies in your country. 8. Send this email to the media, human rights groups, and friends of yours. Finally, on a personal note: I'm writing this in seclusion after the most recent attempt by the Canadian state to silence me through court action. On December 19, the Port Coquitlam "Sheriff's Office" attempted to serve court papers on me. My understanding is that these papers are either a summary arrest notice or a second Restraining Order issued by BC Supreme Court judge James Taylor. This Order, summarily and illegally issued without my ever being subpoenaed or notified, prohibits any public discussion of the allegations made against "chief" Ed John and other native politicians by their own people, who accuse them of crimes against native people in northern BC, including violently evicting them from their lands at the behest of the government of Canada and the North American Water and Power Alliance. Part of this fraudulent court order attempts to ban the further circulation of both of my books. It is clearly aimed at the work of our Truth Commission. In so doing, the Canadian government is silencing its critics under the guise of a bogus "defamation suit" brought by its loyal native front man, Ed John. The crimes against Canada's first people never stopped when the residential schools closed in 1984. State-protected pedophile and child pornography networks, forced eviction of people into poverty and death, police assaults and beatings of native men and women, and third-world levels of disease and death ... these are going on today, and we who are trying to expose and stop such crimes are ourselves being targeted by the state. All of this makes it crucial for each of you to help me and others beat the odds, and bring out the truth of these crimes against indigenous people. If I am not arrested or killed, I will remain in touch with you. If I fall victim to either, others will carry on this work. I entrust each of you with this task. Remember to keep your inner radiance always, and fight unendingly for the land, and for the children and innocents who are on the firing line today. I look forward to hearing from each of you. In truth and hope, Kevin Annett website: booksite: email:
