.gz

The GNU zip format. (MIME-Type: application/gzip) gzip is a free compression program based on the DEFLATE algorithm, which was developed as an alternative to LZW, which is limited by patents.

Unlike, for example, zip, gzip compresses a single file. gzip is often used in conjunction with tar to create a compressed collection of files (.tar.gz or .tgz).
