National Music Publishers Association

The National Music Publishers Association, or NMPA, founded in 1917, is a trade group in the United States that represents the interests of music creators. NMPA lists about 800 individual members, including both small and large music publishers. The combined members and their subsidiaries and affiliates own or administer an estimated 60 percent of copyrighted music works in the country. The goal of NMPA is to protect its members’ property rights on the legislative, litigation, and regulatory fronts.

NMPA is a member of the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA). During its history it was one of the leading voices for the enactment of the Copyright Act of 1976 and it reached a settlement with Napster in 2001 to turn it to a paid service.
