AfterDawn: Glossary

EFF

EFF stands for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The EFF is a non-profit organization that strives to uphold the rights of consumers in the digital world. Founded in 1990, the EFF has grown to be a well-known organization, respected by the majority for the impact it has had.

The EFF has gone to court to defend Free Speech, Privacy, Innovation and Consumer Rights, unafraid of the biggest opponents, even if it is the United States Government or a multi-billion dollar corporation (or even entire industry). The group has championed the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights.

The EFF blends lawyers, policy analysts, activists, and technologists to form a strong front-line against attacks on digital rights or the masses, and is funded primarily by donations. It also has an action center, mobilizing more than 50,000 concerned citizens to fight worrying and unproductive legislation that is being pushed through often for the worst reasons.

EFF also strives to educate the press and public on the most complex cutting edge issues faced today in the United States and in the rest of the world.

It accomplishes its goals primarily by providing or even funding legal defenses in court, defending new technologies from exploitative legal threats that threaten its future, monitors what it calls patent abuses and monitors and challenges legislation that could have a chilling effect on anything it is sworn to protect.
